WPA was contacted by Collins Enterprises to lead the public process portion of the Westport Commons and Watermark Apartments project. The project, begun nearly a decade ago, involves the demolition of 243 Navy housing apartments built in 1948, and the construction of 180 apartments, 68 townhouses, 70 condominiums, and various indoor and outdoor amenities.

Smithfield Retreat

smithfield-retreat-view-01WPA was hired to work with a local family to design a retreat house on the James River in Smithfield, Virginia. The Clients came to us with an idea for a modern barn and a desire for a place where family and friends could gather, read books, play games, and get away from the hustle and bustle of the work-week. The above drawings reflect our first-pass at a schematic design for a house that invites guests to gather in one open room, relax in front of the fire, and hang out on a bluff above the James River.

Renovations to a Residence in Western Branch

WPA is proud to continue to work with our Clients in Western Branch on small renovations and interventions in their home.  This new covered entry sets the stage for procession into the recently renovated entry foyer, music room, living room, dining room and kitchen. Custom glass and steel elements match profiles used on the interior of the house, and solid wood columns are reminiscent of heavy timber columns on the interior, recycled from the now demolished Norfolk Boat House concert venue.

Downtown Norfolk Pilot Parklet Project

WPA teamed up with Blueridge General Contractors for a fun design-build project for the Downtown Norfolk Council. The DNC worked with the City of Norfolk to write guidelines for a pilot parklet program. The WPA/Blueridge Parklet will be built off-site and installed in front of MacArthur square. Once streetscape improvements have been completed for the new Slover Library, the Parklet will move up the street and park in front of 3 Way Café and the WPA studio, providing additional outdoor seating for anyone to use.

Sol’s Partners to develop site to house Making Space, Inc.

WPA was hired by Sol’s Partners to develop a site off of Bridge Road in Suffolk.  Sol’s Partners wish to construct a structure to house Making Space, Inc.

Making Space, Inc., will be a small, local business focused on providing a rich mix of services and facilities to local entrepreneurs, established businesses and homeowners. Phase 1 of the project is a structure of approximately 45,000 square feet, of which 37,000 square feet are dedicated to a self-storage facility. Future phases will include garage spaces, collaborative workshops, and offices.
