WPA Summer Internship — Scholarship Program for Diversity Advancement

WPA is accepting applications for summer of 2023 Diversity Advancement Internship & Scholarship. This full-time internship position provides compensation at $20/hour. Upon completion of the internship, you will be awarded a $2,500 scholarship to be applied to thesis year or graduate school materials and/or tuition.

This internship/scholarship has been created by all of us at WPA in order to help support students who are traditionally underrepresented in the field of architecture based on race, ethnicity, or gender identity & expression in the LGBTQIA+ community. Our profession will be better and stronger when architects and designers reflect the community around us, and WPA is committed to building a more just, equitable, diverse, and inclusive practice and profession. The position is available to any student at an NAAB-accredited school of architecture that is a rising 5th year or entering graduate school for a Masters of Architecture degree (Bachelor of Architecture of Master of Architecture candidates).

At WPA, you will be immersed in a fun and interdisciplinary group of architects, interior designers, urban designers, graphic designers, industrial designers, and educational consultants in an open and collaborative environment. We expect you to come to the table with a love of actively participating in an urban environment and designing and detailing to improve the lives of all citizens in our community.

Please submit a cover letter, resumé, and a portfolio to hiring@wparch.com.  One of WPA’s core values is “community engagement.” In your cover letter, please describe how you hope to benefit and improve the Norfolk-Hampton Roads community or architecture profession as a traditionally underrepresented individual, and how you hope a summer internship at WPA will contribute to that goal. Your resume should include two references, preferably one academic and one professional reference.

The deadline for applications is March 10, 2023. Interviews will be underway in mid-March with candidate selection before the end of March. The duration of this internship is for approximately 2-months beginning June 5th and ending August 11th, with the final dates and duration negotiated with the selected candidate. Applicants must meet the requirements of the I-9 form. If you have any questions about the application or application process, please reach out to erin@wparch.com.
