Nauticus
Winter 2024
The transformation of Nauticus Maritime Discovery Center repositions a regional institution as a dynamic cultural anchor on Norfolk’s evolving waterfront.
Originally designed in the 1990s, Nauticus is one of the last works by noted American architect Charles Moore, in collaboration with Mark Simon of Centerbrook Architects. Since its construction the museum’s strong architectural identity had been diminished over time by interior modifications and dated exhibits. WPA’s renovation strategy reestablishes clarity, accessibility and narrative cohesion — reintroducing visitors to both the building and the stories it tells.
In partnership with nationally recognized exhibit design firm Roto, WPA developed a design that honors the spirit of Moore’s original architecture while introducing a fully contemporary visitor experience. Obstructed views of the water have been reopened, daylight now reaches deeper into the space and outdated finishes have been replaced with clean, durable materials that serve as a neutral backdrop for immersive storytelling.
The nautical theme, once decorative, is now embedded into the architecture and technology to shape a more intuitive and engaging journey through the museum. Additionally, large windows overlooking the Elizabeth River were uncovered, reconnecting visitors with Norfolk’s scenic waterfront and further highlighting the museum’s maritime context.
At the heart of the renovation is the introduction of a highly adaptable mediated environment — spaces intentionally designed to support a wide range of interactive, audiovisual and digital media experiences. A unistrut ceiling grid provides the infrastructure to host complex multimedia installations, while integrated acoustic treatments, lighting controls and projection systems enable flexible, future-ready exhibit design.
This design-forward infrastructure ensures that Nauticus can evolve with new content and technology over time. The result is a museum that seamlessly fuses physical space with digital narrative — encouraging repeat visits, enhancing educational engagement and deepening connections to the maritime history of the region.
With this renovation, WPA and Roto have reimagined Nauticus as more than a museum; it is now a responsive, resilient cultural hub that will serve Norfolk’s residents and visitors for decades to come.
