Two dynamic and sculptural entries will give WHRO a welcomed exterior refresh and provide employees with a way to enjoy the fresh air when taking a break from their desks. The yellow plate steel “awnings” are free-standing, yet shield from inclement weather. They provide a dramatic gesture to neighboring Old Dominion University and the Norfolk community. A play of nighttime illumination reinforces the public radio station brand.
The canopy over the main entrance is approximately 30′ x 15′, a smaller version protects the employee entrance, draining to a rain barrel to water nearby planters. An adjacent courtyard will feature retractable awnings over picnic tables. The update also includes enhanced landscaping, a new ADA ramp, custom bike racks, furnishings, benches and tables.
