The challenge of stabilizing a sinking foundation in this 1920s home, located in a historic Norfolk neighborhood, presented an opportunity to create a more open, contemporary interior on the first level. When the owners invested in the property, they recalled that “everything was running to the center of the house.”

During the process of leveling the foundation, some walls split apart, revealing the potential to remove them entirely. The home received all-new supportive piers and a reinforced structural spine extending from the foundation to the attic. Windows, the roof, and exterior shingles were replaced to match the original specifications.

Inside, an open floor plan now connects the kitchen and gathering spaces, creating a bright, modern environment. An upstairs renovation is planned for the future.
