Urban interventions come in all shapes and sizes — in this case, the size of a parking spot. Parklets are a growing trend in urban placemaking, transforming parking spaces into public green areas that extend from the sidewalk in high-pedestrian-traffic zones. These small urban oases activate streets, providing spaces for gathering and resting.

For one of three initial parklets, WPA partnered with Blueridge General Contractors to develop a design for 216 E. Plume Street, across from the new Slover Library and in front of 3-Way Café and the WPA studio. The project followed guidelines established by the Downtown Norfolk Council and the City of Norfolk. WPA also collaborated with designer Jackie Parks on the construction of the other two parklets.

Designed for flexibility, parklets are quick to install and remove, making them the ultimate portable parks.
