Project Description

Urban interventions come in all shapes and sizes, in this case, the size of a parking spot. “Parklets” are the latest trend in urban placemaking. They are public green spaces typically located within a parking space and extended from the sidewalk in areas that attract pedestrian traffic. They activate streets and create urban oases for gathering and resting. For one of three initial parklets, following guidelines developed by the Downtown Norfolk Council and the City of Norfolk, WPA teamed with Blueridge General Contractors to develop an idea for 216 E. Plume Street, across from the new Slover Library and in front of the 3-Way Café and the WPA studio. Parklets are meant to be quick to install and remove, making them the quintessential portable parks.
